Borbély: We need to build a strong relation with the other historical minorities in Europe

In the framework of the EPP Congress, László Borbély, the political Vice-President of the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania has had a bilateral meeting with Herbert Dorfmann, representative of the South Tyrolean People’s Party which stands up for the rights of the German minority in South Tyrol.

The two politicians discussed about the current political situation in Romania, about the situation of the historical minorities in Europe, as well as about the participation of the Hungarian minority at the upcoming parliamentary elections in Romania. Also, they addressed the issue of the European citizen’s initiative to be launched by the Federal Union of European Nationalities and the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania.

„On behalf of the South Tyrolean People’s Party, Herbert Dorfmann welcomed the idea of launching a European citizen’s initiative and assured us regarding the support his organization would grant for the collecting of the 1 million signatures necessary. The initiative is of utmost importance for us, for the ethnic Hungarian minority in Transylvania, as – in case it will be embraced by the European Commission – it can lead to the broadening of the spectrum of rights of the historical minorities in Europe. We need to get the support of several countries in order to be able to collect 1 million signatures, thus we need to build good relation-ships with ethnic minorities living in other European states, such as the ethnic German minority of South Tyrol. The meeting today has been just another step in this direction” - László Borbély explained.

The South-Tyrolean politician assured the Democratic Alliance of Hungarians in Romania of his support.
