The social phenomenon of drug abuse gets little attention in Harghita County
Drug abuse, just like alcoholism is social problem that is treated as a taboo in Hargita County. Even though the phenomenon is not a pervasive social problem in the region, it no doubt has an increasing tendency, concluded the specialists during a discussion organised on the 30th of March at the County Council. The discussion was preceded by an exhibition on the subject, which can be currently visited in Csíkszereda/Miercurea Ciuc. The exhibition was organised by the Áradat Association and sponsored by EPP MEP Csaba Sógor.
The RMDSZ MEP stated: drug abuse is an issue we should discuss, we cannot sit back just because our national statistics look good. According to the MEP, the issue of the more traditional substance abuse types such as alcoholism should also be addressed, as they pose a social threat in Transylvania.
Participants agreed that there is a need for a network of experts in the field, which could be consulted on prevention or treatment options, an issue that would require immediate action. The work of the institutions dealing with this issue should also be more coordinated in order to raise awareness about drug abuse and alcoholism.
