According to Iuliu Winkler MEP, the introduction of EU history as a mandatory class subject would significantly contribute to the shaping European self-awareness among young people throughout member states.

With the occasion of an on-line debate hosted by Hotnews , the MEP stated that support on behalf of European citizens is required in order for the integration process to have a successful and democratic outcome. In this respect, it is necessary for the citizens of Europe to identify themselves not only as inhabitants of the EU but as Europeans. "Is there such a thing as European citizen? Or are we just mere residents of the EU? The political integration of Europe has to be a democratic process embraced by all its citizens. In order to obtain their support, the European Union has to be a transparent, accessible entity, the workings of which are straightforward to grasp. We need concrete measures to consolidate the European sense of identity, without countervailing regional and local self awareness, but able to create a new dimension in social consciousness. Therefore, I believe that it would be extremely useful to teach EU history in all the schools of member states, starting form middle school" - explained Iuliu Winkler. The MEP also believes that this subject should cover not only the mere progression of contractual agreements which shaped the legislative backbone of the EU, but it should emphasize the formation of concepts and principles that represent the ideological framework of present day EU. "Such a subject could shed light on the fact that the European identity promotes a constructive and positive attitude which does not stand against anything but embellishes local self-awareness "- stressed Iuliu Winkler. The range of topics discussed on Hotnews include the expansion of the EP's jurisdiction, the repositioning of sovereignty, the concepts behind unified taxation and the Romanian impressions regarding the implementation of the United States of Europe.
