National Solidarity Day: Conference held in Bratislava on the situation of Hungarians in Slovakia and Transylvania
On the occasion of National Solidarity Day an exhibition entitled "Encounters, Hungarian travellers and explorers" was opened on 3rd June in Csemadok, at the headquarters of the main Hungarian cultural organization in Slovakia. Hosted by RMDSZ MEP Csaba Sógor, the bilingual exhibition could be visited at first in Brussels, later in Covasna and Lendava.
“On the 4th June, many of us mourn, but this day also provides an opportunity to think proudly about all those Hungarian forefathers who have achieved serious feats not only from a European, but also a global perspective”, said Csaba Sógor.
After the presentation of the exhibition RMDSZ MEP Csaba Sógor and MKP MEP Pál Csáky held a public debate within which the two politicians formulated their views on the current political issues, and especially on the situation of Hungarians in Slovakia and Romania. The two politicians agreed on the fact, that nowadays none of the two countries’ minority protection frameworks can be considered adequate as well as on the importance for the Hungarians in Slovakia or Transylvania to keep on working on a dialogue with the majority, but also on preserving the traditions and to showcase their cultural values. The biggest challenges for the two communities, as identified by the two EPP politicians was to to stop the reduction of the population, for which the right tools must be identified and used.
